The usability of cosmetics after opening depends on the product type and ingredients. Generally, the expiration date printed on cosmetics applies before opening, while the period after opening (PAO) determines how long the product can be safely used once opened.
Typical PAO (Period After Opening)
1. Creams/Lotions (Skincare): 6–12 months
2. Sunscreen: 6–12 months
3. Lipsticks/Lip Balms: 1–2 years
4. Mascara/Eyeliner: 3–6 months (prone to contamination)
5. Powder Products (Blush, Powder Foundation): 1–2 years
6. Liquid Foundation/Concealer: 6–12 months
How to Check
Product Label: Look for symbols like "6M" or "12M," which indicate the product can be used for 6 or 12 months after opening.
Changes in Smell or Texture: If the product smells off, changes color, or separates, stop using it.
Once a product is opened, exposure to air and bacteria can cause it to degrade. It’s generally unsafe to use cosmetics more than a year after opening, depending on storage conditions. Always store products in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maximize their longevity.
